Validation Results
On Monday, this newsletter voted to select an idea we want to validate in the domain name space. The idea you selected was:
A real time data feed that shows when demand has shifted for specific domain names.
We wanted to make a Bloomberg Style data analysis site so domain owners could price their domains accurately.
I put this idea in front of several domain portfolio holders, and the feedback was surprising…
All of the conversations went exactly like this:
Interesting idea but the bigger problem is liquidity. Raising prices on events and if there is no bridge to buyers that is effective, then nothing really moves the needle on a transaction.
This doesn't stand out as something that I would need or use… I need to sell more domain names.
🤔 Hmm. I’m surprised. This sounded like a really cool idea. Right?
Where we went wrong… and the gold we found!

We started from: “Wouldn’t this be a really cool product?”
Which means we were in love with the idea, not the problem or the customers.
We talked to customers and realized this idea isn’t solving anything.
And we learned what the REAL problem is: Liquidity. They simply want to sell more names!
A data analysis site doesn’t help bring them more buyers, which is what they need.
The idea that came in SECOND-PLACE might be worth pursuing!

If we can bring cash-ready buyers to the table, this would be a marketplace worth building.
When building a two-sided marketplace, one side is usually more motivated than the other. In our case, domain owners are motivated.
I see this often…
One of our readers, Tane, had a marketplace idea which matched private investigators with those wanting to hire them.
We were catching up this week, and he updated me on his idea:
I had over 1000 agents waiting for me to create the website platform, but very little clientele....
The lesson?
