On Friday, September 4th the latest U.S. Jobs Report was published. For 2026, AI was cited in 22% of job cuts for the year. Let me quickly tell you the industries that are changing and which ones are actually growing. And, what it has to do with you as an idea explorer.
Data points worth noting
AI was cited in 38,579 U.S. job cuts in May alone. 40% of all announced cuts that month. For reference: AI was cited for only 7% of job cuts in January.
So the rate of job cuts due to AI is accelerating faster than most of us realize.Technology leads all industries with 155,126 announced job cuts for 2026.
The August jobs report actually added 162,000 jobs. But the gains were in food services, healthcare, manufacturing, and education. Information sector employment fell by 23,000. The job gains are in physical, human industries, not tech.
41% of employers surveyed expect to reduce their workforce where AI can automate tasks. But 77% also plan to upskill workers in response to AI.
