We’ve been looking at patterns in who actually moves their ideas forward and who gets stuck iterating. We grouped the most recent US based founders into a cohort to find something that stood out.

We took 852 United States based idea validators and noticed something that surprised us:

• 67% of founders validate their ideas after working hours.

• Only 33% do it during the day.
  
  

After-hours founders act 30.6% of the time vs 13.4% for daytime founders.

Someone validating an idea at 9PM appears to be more motivated. They’ve likely spent a full day at work and are excited for the downtime to pursue the idea they’ve always had. They are deliberately working on their idea at this time of day — whereas working-hours founders have daily distractions that keep them from making progress. It’s all about intent.

This data tells us that most of you have day jobs. If you have a day job, keep it for now. The paycheck takes the pressure off while you work on your idea. Startups end up taking more time than we anticipate, so tinkering after hours is smart.

If you are an after-hours founder, you’re in good company. You have less distractions, and you act on the momentum you’ve generated. You prove it by moving forward at one of the greatest rates we’ve seen.

No matter which camp you fall in — remove the distractions, have one focused session, and take one small step forward. Momentum appears to be everything.
