On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys’ placekicker Brandon Aubrey hit a 64-yard field goal, as time expired, to send their game with the New York Giants into overtime. Minutes later, Aubrey then made a game winning kick and was (understandably) rushed by his teammates.
A few stories have circulated about Brandon Aubrey, and I want you to know the specifics (it’s relevant).
Brandon was an outstanding soccer player at the University of Notre Dame.
He was drafted into the MLS (Major League Soccer) in 2017.
His soccer career fizzled out rather quickly.
He quit and focused on becoming a software engineer.
Then something interesting happened.
In 2019, he was watching an NFL game with his wife, Jenn.
After a field goal was attempted, his wife hit him with four words that changed everything…

What followed?
Brandon hired a football kicking coach and spent three years perfecting the craft.
Was he an NFL-ready kicker then? No.
In 2022, he joined a USFL team in Birmingham, Alabama. The USFL is a smaller professional league in the United States.
His success there opened the door to the NFL, and in 2023 the Dallas Cowboys signed him.
From there, wow:
He’s known for his incredible kicking accuracy and distance.
He set the all-time Cowboys record for field goal distance, making a 65 yard kick in 2024.
That same year, he made 14 field goals from 50+ yards, an all-time NFL record.
He set the all-time record for field goals made to start an NFL career with 35!
The point?
